More than Mud - Dago Lugo

More than Mud is an article and interview series dedicated to documenting the incredible characters and stories that we come across in the world of OCR and outdoor adventure and endurance racing events. They range from everyday heroes to extreme athletes but all have unique and engaging stories to tell.

How Did You Get Into OCR Racing?

I signed up for a Spartan race just because it looked fun. Convinced a friend to do it with me and before the race was over we were hooked. We made it our goal to get the Trifecta and as I raced again I got more competitive and wanted to push myself. I decided OCR would be a sport I would compete to test myself.

What's been your most interesting or memorable moment in your OCR career so far?

My most memorable moment has to be my first race. That was a life changing event for me. My life has never been the same since that race, it did a complete 180 and it was all for the best.

What's the best training or racing advice you've ever received?

I have received a lot of good advice from a lot of people. That is the beauty of this sport, even though we are all out there competing against each other, there is still a brotherhood that exists and people like to help each other out. Being fairly new I have gotten a lot of good advice to gain endurance and speed.

What personal challenges has OCR has helped you overcome?

OCR has definitely helped overcome many personal challenges. I was a bit overweight when I did my first Spartan race and ever since then, when I decided to follow this sport and compete, I dropped the weight I wanted to. I now have this drive that pushes and keeps me motivated to push through any challenges.

What inspires you?

I like that I can inspire others to do something that they might have thought they couldn't do. That in itself inspires me to keep going. I was not your fittest, most athletic person when I started this journey (am still not). Seeing the change in my personal health and body and the motivation it brings to people when they see that change and they want to do what I do is an awesome feeling. If by me doing this I get one person to live a more healthy, active lifestyle, that's enough to inspire me to keep going and push harder.
